City of Columbia Issues Statement Regarding Meal Sharing Plan for Unsheltered Population

By August 15, 2023No Comments

City of Columbia officials and staff have been working on developing a meal sharing plan for feeding the homeless population. The identification of a site and logistical arrangements to ensure cleanliness, health and safety have been ongoing since November 2022. Officials have stated that they are now ready to announce the plan and site for a new feeding initiative, which includes a partnership with a local entity. The meals will be served in an air-conditioned, climate controlled facility that includes restrooms.  The plan is community driven and in response to recommendations from the Homelessness Task Force. Details regarding the partner and plan will be announced by Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, during the City Council meeting on tomorrow, Tuesday, August 15, 2023.

Once this information has been shared, City officials welcome all agencies and individuals, who serve the unsheltered through feeding initiatives, to contact the City’s Director of Homeless Services in order to join this coordinated effort.

The City of Columbia has worked to develop an organized plan of action that will serve those in need, while also ensuring that these operations can be handled in an orderly manner.
