The City of Columbia and the Darnall W. and Susan F. Boyd Foundation are pleased to announce the official grand opening for the Sanctuary at Boyd Island, to be held on Boyd Island on Monday, October 30 at 10:00 am.
The Sanctuary at Boyd Island is located across a scenic footbridge on the Saluda Riverwalk, and offers stunning views of the confluence of the Saluda and Broad Rivers forming the headwaters of the Congaree River. The seven-acre island features an abundance of wildlife and more than 75 species of flora, including views of Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies. The island features a winding foot trail, an observation deck with panoramic overlooks of the rivers’ confluence, artistically rendered metal benches, picnic tables and a gazebo by artist Chris Stuyck, and metal sculptures designed by acclaimed naturalist artist Renee Bemis depicting native plants and animals.
Representatives of the City of Columbia, the Darnall W. and Susan F. Boyd Foundation, and the River Alliance will provide details about the island sanctuary, and the efforts to facilitate its incredible transformation into a public outdoor space available to the community. Shuttle service will be available from the lower Riverbanks Zoo parking lot to the event site.
