On Friday, February 18, 2022, the City of Columbia and Richland School District One will celebrate their partnership with the Inaugural One City: Future Ready Annual Internship/Apprenticeship Signing Day event. The One City: Future Ready internship was established to serve as a bridge between the City of Columbia and Richland School District One to provide career opportunities, exposure and development for students who’ve expressed interest in being career ready during and after high school. Due to the success of the 2021 pilot program which was exclusive to students interested in CDL opportunities, this work-based learning program has expanded in 2022 to include multiple departments within the City of Columbia. “Programs such as these are critical to nurture and support our young people as we develop the next generation of skilled professionals who are necessary to the growth of the City of Columbia,” as emphasized by the City Manager, Teresa Wilson.
Work-based learning experiences offered by the City of Columbia provide students with a professional work environment along with high expectations for learning the technical skills required for various career pathways.
Under the leadership of Dr. Tiniece Javis, Human Resources Director for the City of Columbia, her team is committed to developing quality candidates by forming partnerships, establishing relationships and recruiting candidates who are ready to start or grow their careers. The One City: Future Ready internship will provide students with unforgettable work experiences in their desired career fields while equipping them as they enter the workforce with the advantage of possessing relevant certifications and hands-on experience.
This year’s cohort will begin their City of Columbia internship in the Spring and Summer of 2022. Due to the interest and early success of the partnership, the program has reached capacity for 2022. With the growing popularity of the internship, The City of Columbia and Richland School District One are not only solidifying placement for 2022, but also working to accept more students in the Internship/Apprenticeship Program for 2023.
