PHILADELPHIA — Mayor Rickenmann today joined mayors from across the United States in Philadelphia for the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ 250th Celebration, marking the anniversary of American independence at Independence Hall – the very site where the Continental Congress cast its historic vote on July 2, 1776.

The gathering brought together Republican, Democratic and Independent mayors from cities of all sizes to reaffirm their shared commitment to democratic governance and the communities they serve.

“As we commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, we celebrate the enduring values of democracy, freedom, and civic responsibility that have shaped our nation for generations,” said Mayor Daniel Rickenmann. “It is an honor to stand alongside mayors from across the country at the birthplace of our democracy, reaffirming our shared commitment to serving our communities and ensuring that the promise of America continues to inspire future generations.”

Columbia residents and visitors have a wide variety of America250 events to choose from throughout Columbia, the Midlands, and South Carolina. From historical tours and commemorative ceremonies to educational programs, festivals, exhibits, and community celebrations, these events highlight South Carolina’s pivotal role in the American Revolution and the people, places, and stories that helped shape our nation’s founding. For Mayor Rickenmann and the other mayors who joined together in Philadelphia, there was strong agreement that democracy is not only made in Washington; it is made in America’s cities, every single day. Every permit approved, every program delivered, every town hall held is democracy made real. The constitutional principles that unite this nation live in cities, in how local leaders treat their most vulnerable residents, protect civil rights, and make sure every voice counts. Cities are the keepers of that promise.
