City of Columbia Parks Division partners with Green Goat Land Management to trim vegetation at Riverfront Park

The City of Columbia Parks Division contracted with Green Goat Land Management this week to trim vegetation at Riverfront Park.  The goats are working on the slope adjacent to the Esplanade at Canal Side, contained by fencing with electrical current.  They will be on site for approximately two weeks.

This inaugural project will examine the potential for use of goats in other challenging locations.  Our test site has a steep, rocky embankment that requires staff to belay on rope to hand cut vegetation.  Goats are well acclimated to these conditions.

There are benefits beyond safety that qualify goats for this work: we will be able to use fewer chemical herbicides and growth inhibitors, always a consideration when working beside our waterways.  Goats’ digestive systems contain enzymes that break down seeds, diminishing the return of unwanted vegetation and leaving wonderful fertilizer behind to amend the soil.

This traditional but innovative solution to a difficult grounds maintenance task reflects our commitment to provide quality parks and recreation experiences for everyone.  We hope that you will take time soon to visit Riverfront Park at 312 Laurel Street to see the goats in action and to enjoy this beautiful spring weather!
