The City of Columbia is continuing proactive mosquito control efforts following several confirmed cases of West Nile Virus among residents and positive mosquito samples collected within the City.
As a precaution, the City’s Vector Control staff has been conducting targeted spraying for adult mosquitoes in affected areas and will continue treatment as necessary. Spraying is typically conducted between midnight and dawn to minimize disruption; however, treatment may begin earlier depending on weather and other conditions.
Residents who are allergic or sensitive to permethrin, deltamethrin or tau-fluvalinate, products used in mosquito control treatments, are encouraged to contact Vector Control staff so appropriate precautions can be taken. Residents may call 803-545-4229 or email [email protected].
Beekeepers within the City of Columbia are also encouraged to contact staff to provide the location of active hives so they can be taken into consideration during mosquito control operations.
Residents are urged to take these preventive measures to reduce the threat of mosquitoes:
- Use, according to the label instructions, EPA registered insect repellents that contain DEET, Picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus
- Clear drainage ditches of debris and weeds
- Empty and turn over outdoor containers holding water
- Eliminate overgrown grass, weeds, and shrubbery
- Pack tree holes with sand
- Clean clogged roof gutters
- Keep boats overturned, drained or covered (covers should not collect water)
- Stock ornamental ponds and water gardens with top-feeding minnows
- Properly maintain swimming pools
- Change the water in pet dishes, birdbaths and plant containers at least once a week
- Make sure there are screens on rain barrels and use the water as soon as possible.
