This evening’s City Council meeting included several presentations.

 

Throughout the month of September the City of Columbia Public Relations, Media and Marketing Department hosted various fundraisers in support of Sistercare. The fundraisers included the Sistercare Toiletry Drive and two Sistercare Saturday Dunk Tank events.

In support of the toiletry drive, sixteen local businesses and city departments partnered with the City’s Public Relations Department and allowed donation boxes to be on display at the various locations throughout the entire month of September. The businesses and departments included:

 

    • City of Columbia Payment Center
    • Columbia – Richland Fire Department
    • City of Columbia Parks and Recreation
    • Swiff Brand
    • All Good Books
    • A Little Happy Shop
    • Mast General Store
    • Sweet GG’s Bakery
    • The Food Academy
    • Sunrise Café
    • St. John Baptist Church
    • Hawthorne Taylor Pharmacy
    • Finklin Pharmacy
    • Junior League of Columbia
    • Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated – Omega Gamma Omega Chapter
    • Theta Chi Iota Phi Chapter

 

Over the course of the toiletry drive, community members donated 3,539 items to be donated to Sistercare.

 

The City of Columbia’s two Sistercare Saturday Dunk Tank events, which allowed community members to participate in dunking several local celebrities, raised $1,510 to be donated to Sistercare.

 

At the 2023 Mayor’s Walk Against Domestic Violence, which took place on October 7th 2023, there was over 1,000 registered walkers to show their support for Domestic Violence Victims and their Families. There were also ten exhibitors and 15 volunteers.

 

Mayor Daniel Rickenmann also presented two proclamations. The National Arts & Humanities Month Proclamation was presented in to proclaim October 2023 as National Arts and Humanities Month in Columbia, South Carolina and to encourage community members to celebrate and promote the arts and humanities in our nation.

 

The Fire Prevention Month Proclamation was presented to proclaim October 2023 as Fire Prevention Month as well as recognize the City of Columbia for being committed to ensuring the safety and security of those living in and visiting Columbia.

 

Christine Hait from League of Women Voters of Columbia, also gave an update on Vote411.org. Vote411.org was launched by the League of Women Voters Education Fund in October 2006 and is a “one-stop-shop” for election related information.
