This evening’s council meeting was Councilman Howard Duvall’s last official meeting. There were several tributes to him including a photo and video presentation.

He was gifted a variety of items and it was also revealed that a Nuttall Oak has been planted outside City Hall in honor of Councilman Duvall for his many years of dedication to Columbia’s tree canopy. He has been an advocate in keeping our Tree City USA Designation with his commitment to our City. A dedication plaque will be placed at the base of the tree.

Councilman Duvall is a native of Cheraw, South Carolina. He graduated from the Citadel in 1965 with a BA in Political Science. In 1990 he earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of South Carolina. He also served in the U.S. Air Force as well as the South Carolina National Guard.

He is no stranger to government, having served as Director of Intergovernmental Relations for the Municipal Association of South Carolina. He also served on Cheraw Town Council, Mayor of Cheraw as well as Executive Assistant to Governor Richard W. Riley. In 2015, Councilman Duvall was elected to the At-Large seat on the Columbia City Council. He has been an active member of the council and advocated for public safety throughout his tenure.
