The Columbia-Richland 911 Communications Center is now hiring for new positions within the department including call takers, 2nd shift call takers, telecommunicator dispatchers, and 2nd shift telecommunicator dispatchers.

The Columbia-Richland 911 Communications Center is a vital part of the public safety and response team, as they are the first point of contact when citizens call 9-1-1 for emergencies.

The call takers answer all of the incoming calls from the public. They are assigned to determine the nature of the call and effectively provide lifesaving and pre-arrival instructions to the caller while emergency services are in route.

The telecommunicator dispatchers dispatch the appropriate agency (police, fire, and/or emergency medical services) to the incident location. They constantly maintain awareness of available response units in order to dispatch calls appropriately and efficiently.

All positions require a high school diploma or GED, type 30 corrected words per minute, and have a valid South Carolina (Class D) driver’s license. Telecommunicator dispatchers also have to have six (6) months of relevant prior experience.

As an employee with the City of Columbia, staff will receive competitive compensation, cost-effective health, dental, and vision insurance plans, and financial benefit programs for deferred compensation and retirement.
