SUMMARY:Unveiling of "Greetings From Columbia" Mural at Finlay Park
DESCRIPTION:The City of Columbia\, in partnership with Keep the Midlands Beautiful (KMB)\, will celebrate the unveiling of the new “Greetings From Columbia” mural with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday\, June 10\, 2026\, at 11:00 a.m. at the Laurel Street entrance to Finlay Park. \n  \nInstalled near the park’s signature spiral fountain\, the mural is the third in Keep the Midlands Beautiful’s “Connecting and Protecting Communities” mural series across Lexington and Richland counties. The artwork was designed and painted by Austin Garrett Reagan with input and guidance from the City of Columbia and was funded by Keep the Midlands Beautiful. \n  \nThe mural highlights Columbia’s unique character while promoting anti-litter and recycling messages that encourage residents and visitors to help keep the community clean and beautiful. \n  \n“The ‘Greetings From Columbia’ image and the anti-litter and recycling theme will be a vibrant greeting for visitors to our newly reopened Finlay Park and inspire civic and community pride\,” said Skot Garrick\, Strategic Initiatives Administrator for the City of Columbia. \n  \nThe Columbia mural follows the installation of similar murals in Swansea and Lexington as part of Keep the Midlands Beautiful’s ongoing effort to foster community pride and environmental stewardship throughout the Midlands. \n  \n“These murals are designed to help instill pride among residents and visitors in our city and state\,” said Traude Sander\, Executive Director of Keep the Midlands Beautiful. “We each play a role in keeping our community an attractive\, healthy\, happy\, and safe place for all of us to live\, work and play. Something as simple as putting litter where it belongs\, every time\, can make a tremendous difference.” \n  \nCommunity members and media representatives are invited to attend the ribbon cutting and view the mural as one of the newest additions to Finlay Park. \n

Take the survey here: https://growth.columbiasc.gov/portfolio/congaree-riverfront-district/ \nFollowing City Council’s December 2025 approval of a professional services agreement to begin planning and design work for the 100-acre riverfront district\, along with a $5 million philanthropic commitment from the Boyd Foundation\, the City of Columbia and its design team are now turning their focus to listening. \nThe City will host the first in a series of public meetings on April 1\, offering residents\, stakeholders and riverfront users an opportunity to share ideas\, priorities and concerns before any design concepts are developed. \n“For years\, we’ve talked about truly connecting our city to our three rivers. This first phase of engagement is the next step in creating 27 miles of continuous greenway that will redefine the Capital City\,” said Mayor Daniel Rickenmann. “This isn’t just about a single park; it’s about a vibrant district reflecting the unique character of our community. Your input on everything from recreation to environmental preservation is at the heart of this process. This is your riverfront\, and we want the final vision to be a reflection of your dreams for Columbia.” \nThe first public meeting will focus on gathering input regarding opportunities and challenges along the riverfront\, desired recreational amenities and public spaces\, environmental priorities and preservation\, and links to surrounding neighborhoods and destinations.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][image_with_animation image_url=”783281″ image_size=”full” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space\, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated\, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat…at least until the meter runs out! \nWe are excited to announce that the City of Columbia\, in partnership with the South Carolina Chapter of the American Society for Landscape Architects and One Columbia for Arts and Culture\, is again helping to facilitate PARK(ing) Day\, a national event that takes place on Friday\, September 19\, 2025. This event is about reclaiming on-street parking spaces as public space for people\, for one day out of the year (10:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.). Participants design and install temporary elements that can include seating\, art\, games\, plants\, etc. to encourage people to interact in the public right-of-way. \nThis is our tenth year temporarily transforming Downtown Columbia. \nThis year\, the PARK(ing) Day theme builds on the recent Downtown Columbia Strategic Plan and Guidelines and we’re asking you to think more about how you’d like to plan your public realm to create more engaging and attractive public spaces in Columbia. You can use the plan’s big ideas for inspiration\, or design your own perfect daydream for Columbia. The creativity is up to you! \n  \nWhat is the public realm? It’s that part of our urban fabric that is made up of publicly owned places and spaces that belong to and are accessible by everyone; our streets\, plazas\, sidewalks\, trails\, parks\, open spaces\, and more. The pedestrian realm\, which encompasses the open space between a building’s face and the curb\, is host to any number of streetscape elements that help contribute to a pleasant\, walkable city. How would you populate the pedestrian realm? The possibilities are endless. \nWe want you to BRING it. \nCan you believe it’s been a decade since our first PARK(ing) Day in Downtown Columbia? We are so excited to celebrate with you and to see how you build on the many creative parks we’ve seen these past nine inspiring years of tactical urbanism! \nPARK(ing) Day is all about collaborative creativity. \nPARK(ing) Day is about designing open space that not only attracts but also engages the community through the physical design of the space itself. Your park can be a nice place to sit and read. It can be a place for a sculpture. It can be an outdoor art gallery. It can be a botanical garden. It can foster community dialogue. It can be a picnic area. It just takes a bit of imagination and an application. \nHow to Par(k)ticipate: \n\nFind out more\, and get the application at columbiacompass.org/parklets\nPlan your park and remember this year’s theme is a broad one. We’re asking you to think about how you’d Plan Your Public Realm as part of your design!\nGet the necessary insurance\, or if you are an artist or with an arts organization\, contact One Columbia (info@onecolumbiasc.com or 803-254-5008) for support\nReserve your space(s) – parking space reservations are first come\, first served! https://bit.ly/2025Meters\n\nSubmit the full application by 5:00 p.m. on Friday\, August 29\, 2025 (you’ll receive a link to submit the full application after you reserve your spaces) \nThere WILL be prizes. \nThis year\, we’re holding our fifth annual PARK(ing) Day Design Contest\, and up for grabs are a People’s Choice Award and a juried Best Design Award. Winners get bragging rights\, as well as some fun\, locally-sourced\, prizes. It’s our tenth year of PARK(ing) Day and we know the competition will be steep\, so we’re working to pull together some extra special prizes this year\, too! \nTo learn more about PARK(ing) Day in Columbia\, visit https://columbiacompass.org/parklets. If you have questions regarding PARK(ing) Day\, contact Planning and Development Services Department at 803-545-3222 or via email at parkingday@columbiasc.gov. For information on the international PARK(ing) Day movement and to access resources\, check out https://www.asla.org/parkingday2024.aspx .[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The redevelopment of 1401 Main Street into the new Municipal Complex reflects the City’s commitment to improving accessibility\, enhancing operational efficiency\, and providing residents with a centralized location for key municipal services. \nThis announcement serves as a catalyst for transformational change\, not only shaping the vibrancy and walkability of Columbia’s downtown core\, but also advancing strategic economic development efforts across the entire city. \nAdjacent to the new complex\, Core Spaces will bring a new mixed-use development to the heart of the Main Street District.
