We envision Columbia as a vibrant, prosperous, innovative and appealing community.
The Columbia Development Corporation is a catalyst that stimulates economic and residential development served to advance the overall quality of life in Columbia.
For more than 30 years the Columbia Development Corporation (CDC) has assisted economic development in Columbia through public-private partnerships and business development. Created in 1983 the CDC made its mark on Columbia guiding the 20 year redevelopment of the Congaree Vista, the former warehouse and railroad district, into a premiere arts and entertainment destination. The Vista set the stage for the renaissance of the entire Columbia City Center that is underway today. Now the CDC serves a huge area of the city including the Vista and Five Points entertainment districts and the Devine Street shopping district. We also serve the most vibrant downtown neighborhoods including Shandon, Olympia, Rosewood, and many others. With two healthy entertainment districts and great neighborhoods bracketing the downtown commercial office district the CDC strives to support appropriate and sustainable development to increase opportunities for business, citizens, and visitors.
CDC's goals include creation of new business opportunities as a partner and leader in private sector development, preservation of historic properties and buildings of character, development of residential opportunities of all income levels, and support of the retail, arts, culture and entertainment sectors, all with the aim to create sustainable commercial districts supporting strong neighborhoods nearby. Our partnership projects are always geared toward helping the community move to the next phase of sustainable development. We are always raising the bar with creativity and positive development, making the community better and creating new tax base.
The CDC participates in joint venture equity deals, sale of land for appropriate development, and finding creative ways to increase the standard of living and opportunities in the community. Each partnership project must meet the high standards of the CDC Board members representing the neighborhoods and business communities we serve. Each project must contribute to the district and help create additional private development opportunities and be a positive force for nearby residences.
CDC also provides a number of other services to the city, from day-to-day business and development assistance, to helping developers and retailers find locations, and loan sources. The corporation is also the first stop for assistance related to the City of Columbia for help with encroachments, permits, variances, and hearings involving businesses, districts, and design issues. The CDC manages special programs and projects assigned by the Board and by the City of Columbia.
