SUMMARY:Happy Hour: Renovation Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy happy hour with past Mabel Payne award winners as they discuss architecture and preservation in Columbia \n\n\n\n\nJoin City preservation staff\, local preservationists\, and historic home owners for a chat about preservation and architecture in Columbia. Past Mabel Payne Award winners will offer tips and tools for tackling local renovation and preservation projects. Join in the conversation with your own stories or come ready with questions about your project. \nGiven annually by the the City of Columbia Planning Division\, the Mabel Payne Award is named for one of the City’s first planners whose dedication and advocacy for historic structures laid the groundwork for preservation in Columbia and made her a trail blazer in preservation. The award recognizes individuals\, organizations\, and neighborhoods for their outstanding efforts in education\, leadership\, conservation\, or stewardship which supports our built environment and\, ultimately\, the entire City. Mabel Payne Award winners may work behind the scenes or they may be front and center\, but their work has had a significant impact on Columbia and its historic built environment through their outstanding efforts in education\, leadership\, conservation\, or stewardship of the City’s historic resources. \nAbout Mabel Payne \nMabel Payne was a City of Columbia employee whose work in the 1950s documenting and preserving historic structures laid the foundation for preservation in the City. Her records of historic properties are often the only surviving information available on demolished buildings that were once a part of the City’s historic downtown. \n\n\nRegistration recommended: Preservation Happy Hour: Renovation Roundtable Tickets\, Thursday\, May 28  •  6 PM – 8 PM | Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Unveiling of "Greetings From Columbia" Mural at Finlay Park
DESCRIPTION:The City of Columbia\, in partnership with Keep the Midlands Beautiful (KMB)\, will celebrate the unveiling of the new “Greetings From Columbia” mural with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday\, June 10\, 2026\, at 11:00 a.m. at the Laurel Street entrance to Finlay Park. \n  \nInstalled near the park’s signature spiral fountain\, the mural is the third in Keep the Midlands Beautiful’s “Connecting and Protecting Communities” mural series across Lexington and Richland counties. The artwork was designed and painted by Austin Garrett Reagan with input and guidance from the City of Columbia and was funded by Keep the Midlands Beautiful. \n  \nThe mural highlights Columbia’s unique character while promoting anti-litter and recycling messages that encourage residents and visitors to help keep the community clean and beautiful. \n  \n“The ‘Greetings From Columbia’ image and the anti-litter and recycling theme will be a vibrant greeting for visitors to our newly reopened Finlay Park and inspire civic and community pride\,” said Skot Garrick\, Strategic Initiatives Administrator for the City of Columbia. \n  \nThe Columbia mural follows the installation of similar murals in Swansea and Lexington as part of Keep the Midlands Beautiful’s ongoing effort to foster community pride and environmental stewardship throughout the Midlands. \n  \n“These murals are designed to help instill pride among residents and visitors in our city and state\,” said Traude Sander\, Executive Director of Keep the Midlands Beautiful. “We each play a role in keeping our community an attractive\, healthy\, happy\, and safe place for all of us to live\, work and play. Something as simple as putting litter where it belongs\, every time\, can make a tremendous difference.” \n  \nCommunity members and media representatives are invited to attend the ribbon cutting and view the mural as one of the newest additions to Finlay Park. \n
