AS Frequently Asked Questions pic

Can I volunteer at the animal shelter?

Yes! We have volunteers of all ages.

Do you euthanize animals at the shelter?

Unfortunately, yes, but through an aggressive spay/neuter program, we hope to end euthanasia of adoptable pets.  Overpopulation of unwanted dogs and cats lead to the need for euthanasia. Spaying/neutering cats and dogs reduce this need. See Spay/Neuter Your Pet to learn more about the benefits and details.

How is the City working to reduce the need for euthanasia?
By making spaying/neutering as easy and affordable for citizens, the City's goal is to reduce the number of unwanted animals.
The City gives rent-free space to the SPCA, adjacent to the shelter, in exchange for a low-cost public spay/neuter clinic.
The City of Columbia Animal Services has twice been named the S.C. Animal Care and Control Agency of the Year due to our many innovative programs.
You can help reduce the need for euthanasia by adopting a shelter pet.
