City of Columbia to Provide Briefing on Columbia Canal Recovery

The City of Columbia is pleased to provide an update on the status of the repair and recovery of the historic Columbia Canal. The planned improvements include repair to the Canal and restoration of the Hydroelectric Generating Station, replacement of the Canal headgates, and the construction of a resilient water supply intake in the Congaree River. This press conference will take place on the EdVenture Children’s Museum outdoor terrace (Coble Plaza) at 211 Gervais St., on Friday, October 4, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.

Objectives of the Columbia Canal Recovery project include:

  • Restoring the reliability and improving the resiliency of the City’s water supply
  • Repairing the Columbia Canal and returning it to normal operation
  • Returning the Hydroelectric Generation Station back to operation
  • Modernizing the existing Headgate equipment to allow for improved responsiveness
  • Honoring the history and natural beauty of the Columbia Canal and Riverfront Park

Who: Mayor Daniel J. Rickenmann, Mayor Pro-Tem Will Brennan, City of Columbia Councilmembers, City Manager Teresa Wilson, Assistant City Manager of Columbia Water Clint Shealy, Federal, State and Local elected officials, Federal and State Agencies,  business leaders and other stakeholders.
