Columbia Parks & Recreation Department Will Unveil Historic Marker Recognizing Eau Claire’s Lincoln Park for Its Significant Role in Defining Early 20th Century Race Relations

(Columbia, SC) The Columbia Parks & Recreation Department will unveil a historic marker at Lincoln Park in the Eau Claire community on Monday, February 26 at 12:00 pm (noon).

Lincoln Park, which at one time featured an auditorium, outdoor theater, and pool, became a significant gathering and recreational location for Columbia’s African-American communities at the beginning of the 20th Century. Approximately 4,000 people gathered for the park’s formal opening in July of 1901.

Attending the unveiling ceremony for the historic marker will be Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, Columbia District 1 Councilwoman Tina N. Herbert, and Dr. Bobby Donaldson. Dr. Donaldson serves as a Professor of History and the Executive Director of the Center for Civil Rights History and Research at the University of South Carolina-Columbia, and is the founding director for the Columbia SC 63.
