Mayor Steve Benjamin to Host 8th Annual Drills & Skills Clinics
Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin is hosting the 8th Annual Drills & Skills Clinics for youth ages 6-13. This year, the Drills & Skills Clinics will include two instructional sessions, for one week in both July and August. Youth will have the opportunity to expand their skills in the following sports: basketball, tennis, golf, soccer, flag football and cheerleading. The clinics will be held July 17th – 21st and August 7th – 11th, 2017 at various locations across the City. The clinics are free and open to ages 6-13.
Columbia becomes First South Carolina City to Commit to 100 percent Clean Energy
The Columbia City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution establishing a community-wide goal of transitioning to 100 percent clean and renewable energy by 2036. “It’s up to us as leaders to creatively implement clean energy solutions for our cities across the nation,” said Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin. “It’s not merely an option now; it’s imperative. Cities, citizens and businesses can create new green economy jobs and can lead the transition away from fossil fuels to 100 percent clean and renewable energy. Columbia is taking action.” Columbia represents the first city or town in South Carolina to commit to 100 percent renewable energy and the 36th city in the United States to make such a commitment.
City Community Development Receives John A. Sasso Award
On Monday, June 19, 2017, the National Community Development Association (NCDA) recognized the City of Columbia Community Development Department as one of the winners of the 2017 John A. Sasso National Community Development Week Award during a special luncheon at the 48th NCDA Annual Conference in Miami, FL. The award was created as a means of recognizing community efforts to promote and celebrate the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program and the HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) Program during National Community Development Week which was celebrated this year on April 19 – April 22, 2017. s.

Join the City of Columbia as they host the Life is a Cycle bike even on Thursday, June 29 at 6 p.m. Every mile that you bike for transportation can reduce your risk for heart disease [1], save a pound of pollution from going into our air [2], and put $0.48 back in your pocket [3]. Biking to work has increased by 60% across the US since 2000 [4]. Learn about bike commuting from the experts who build your local bike infrastructure. Life is a Cycle will also provide strategies for blended commuting with a car or public transportation. Life is a Cycle is an event for anyone who has ever been curious about bike commuting. Life is a Cycle is a rare opportunity to experience active transportation in a group setting.
